Titan Mercury wrestlers set eyes on titles at Nationals in Las Vegas

Las Vegas has served as the city stage for USA wrestling’s premier national competitions for years. This weekend is no different except for a change of scheduling. Instead of having all styles of wrestling, only freestyle women’s and greco wrestling will compete will wrestle this weekend at the Westin sports convention center for the senior nationals. Men’s freestyle will wait to compete at the U.S. Open in the spring.

USA wrestling has made substantial changes in their scheduling to merge with the upcoming national and world changes that United world wrestling has decided to implement. As soon as 2018 the World Championships, which is long been held in the late summer, will shift to the winter. Subsequently USA wrestling has made adjustments to fulfill these changes for the betterment of our athletes. Paired with USA wrestling’s youth tournament, the Royal crush, women and Greco wrestlers from around the nation will compete this weekend not only for the title, but also for the opportunity to compete at the World Team Trials which will be held back in Las Vegas this spring: the same time as the US open. The men’s freestyle US open will serve as the qualifier for the men’s freestyle team and their World Team Trials will be held in June in Lincoln Nebraska.

Titan Mercury Wrestling Club will once again look to win the Senior Women’s National Championships. The team will be led by Olympian and multiple world medalist Elena Pirozkhova. Pirozhkova will be competing at 69 kg and will likely face TMWC teammate Tamyra Mensah, who also is the reigning Senior National Champion and 2016 Olympic Trials Champion. Mallory Velte is coming off a berth into the World Team Trials finals, held in New York this past November. Also competing for Titan Mercury, Jaccara Winchester, Amy Fearnside and Jennifer Page all will bring vast amount of experience as they compete for the national title.

TMWC will also have two wrestlers competing at Greco Roman. Zack Merrill has been a staple at the 98 kg weight class and will look to capitalize off of his experience and when his first title. Micah Burak will be competing in Greco this weekend as well really. Relatively new to the Greco-Roman senior-level seen, Burak has a vast amount of national level competition in freestyle and could pose a threat in the upper weights.
