TMWC takes on the World in Ukraine at the 2016 World Clubs Cup
By: Jonny Ruggiano
On November 30th the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club will face off against the best club teams in the World for the prize of $25,000. More important than any monetary value is the chance for Titan Mercury to claim the right to be called the best team in the World. To earn this honor Titan Mercury Wrestling Club of the USA will have to defeat the top clubs from Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Mongolia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kyrgystan, Sierra Leone, Iran and Ukraine.
The World Clubs Cup has become one of the United World Wrestling’s annual marquee events. Nations Ukraine and Iran will host this year’s event at the Sports Palace “Locomotive” in Kharkov, Ukraine. Iran has played host the past two years in Tehran and Jouybar, Iran. This year’s change of scene has attracted a more diverse mix. Never the less the front runner team remains to be Bimeh Razi of Iran who are reigning World Clubs Cup Champions.
This year’s Bimeh Razi is headlined by Olympic bronze medalist Hasan Rahimi at 57 kg. Wrestlers Masoud Esmailpour at 61 kg., Alireza Karimi at 86 kg., Abas Tahan at 97 kg., as well as Parviz Hadi at 125 kg., all have World Cup and or World Championship experience, which will be vital to their team. At 65 kg Bimeh Razi will have an unnamed foreign wrestler added to their squad. United World Wrestling rules allow each club the opportunity to have two members of each club come from other nations. Iran will have another competition team in Setaregan e Saari. While the jockeying for a stronger roster is common place in the World Clubs Cup, it’s the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club that seems to be poised to make its mark this year.
Titan Mercury boasts a cast of some of the United States best wrestlers along with an international sensation. Leading the team is the youngest wrestler to ever win World and Olympic titles: Kyle Snyder. The 97 kilo TMWC wrestler Snyder is joined by fellow Olympic and World Champion Vladimir Khinchegashvili of Georgia. Khinchegashvili who won the Rio Olympics at 57 kg. will compete at 61 kg. for Titan Mercury.
Alongside the two Olympic champions is a stable of young, but internationally tested wrestlers. Nico Megaludis, BJ Futrell and Alex Dieringer all are coming off their recent international titles at the Bill Farrell International in New York City. Most notably was Dieringer’s win against Olympian and World bronze medalist Bekzod Abdurakhmonov.
Two time NCAA Champion and Hodge trophy winner David Taylor will compete at 86 kg. Taylor began his international run last year after completing his stellar college career in 2015. This past summer Taylor was crowned champion at the Spanish Grand Prix. Both 70 kg. wrestler Nazar Kulchytskyy and 125 kg. grappler Nick Gwiazdowski have solid international experiences as well. Kulchytskyy, a Ukrainian native was a three time NCAA Division III Champion for the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. Heavyweight Gwiazdowski is one the best wrestlers to come out of North Carolina State, winning two NCAA Championships and earning a berth into the finals three times.
