The New York Athletic Club is known as the oldest athletic club in the United States with a tradition second to none. So it was fitting to hold a competition of the World’s oldest sport on the weekend of Veteran’s day. Along with this rich tradition, the NYAC held its annual Bill Farrell International Wrestling Tournament with a little more at stake this year: two spots on the World Team. The prized position attracted many of the nation’s top wrestlers however both spots were claimed by members of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club.
While TMWC is newest of all top tier clubs, it has not waited to make its mark. In four short years Titan Mercury boasts several World Champions, World medalists and is the home for reigning Olympic Champion, Kyle Snyder and Olympic Bronze Medalist, J’Den Cox.
This past weekend was no less impressive than what has become expected from the juggernaut TMWC. Titan Mercury came home with six champions out of eight contested weight classes and a total of sixteen wrestlers placing in the top four. The NYAC had four, top four finishers, while the Sunkist Kids and Minnesota Storm both claimed three individual placers. The World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) had one placer. The remaining five medalists came from a variety of international teams.
Regarding the club’s dominance, TMWC co-founder Wayne Boyd said, “When one works hard and has great support it shows. Andy Barth and team were in full force and it was one of our best performances in the history of our club. All the credit goes to the gladiators in the circle.”
Those competitors were led by former World Bronze medalist James Green who earned his second trip to the World Championships by defeating the Sunkist Kids’ Jordan Oliver in two straight matches. Also earning his first World Team spot was Logan Stieber. Stieber dominated Tyler Graff of the NYAC in two matches for a combined score of 20-0.
Other Individual champions for the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club included Nico Megaludis, BJ Futrell, Alex Dieringer, and Austin Trotman. Both Futrell and Trotman defeated fellow TMWC members in the finals. Alex Dieringer defeated world medalist Bekzod Abdurakhmonov of the NYAC to claim the title.
