Titan Mercury sends six athletes to Olympic Trials Finals
By: Jason Welch
Tonight Titan Mercury has six athletes in the Olympic Trials finals: Victoria Anthony at 48 kg, Victoria Francis at 75 kg, Tony Ramos at 57 kg, Daniel Dennis at 57 kg, Kyle Dake at 86 kg, and Kyle Snyder at 97 kg. The best-of-three series is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
At 86 kg Kyle Snyder, the returning world champion, will face Jake Varner. Varner dominated his way through the morning challenge tournament, and was a gold medalist at the 2012 Olympics.
At 57 kg Tony Ramos will face fellow Titan Mercury athlete and Hawkeye Daniel Dennis. Ramos won two close matches to get to the finals, including a semifinal 4-4 win over 2012 Olympian Coleman Scott. It will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts to this hometown match up.
In the finals at 48 kg is Victoria Anthony. In her semifinals match verse Clarissa Chun, Anthony came out offensive right away with an inside trip right to a leg lace, leading 6-0 in the first minute, and ending the match 9-2. She will face Haley Augello tonight.
Kyle Dake looks to make his first Olympic team at 86 kg. After a storied collegiate wrestling career, Dake struggled to make the U.S.A. team at 74 kg due to the dominance of Jordan Burroughs. Dake seems to have adjusted to this new weight class and looks as strong as anyone. In the semifinals Dake beat David Taylor 3-4, holding a full split in the closing seconds to secure the match. This is his eighth victory over Taylor.
Victoria Francis will challenge returning world champion Adeline Gray at 75 kg. Francis beat fellow Titan Mercury athlete Jackie Surber in the finals of the challenge tournament.
